Professor Garrick Louis, a 2015 Jefferson Science Fellow, is serving for one year at the U.S. Department of State as a science and technology advisor on foreign policy issues. Systems engineers contribute their expertise in seeking solutions to global issues such as hunger, clean water, energy, and sanitation. Prof. Louis was recently at the Milan Expo in Italy. Professors Bill Scherer and Mike Smith recently led a National Science Foundation workshop on the Future of Systems Engineering Education in Arlington, VA, where premier systems engineering thinkers in academia, government and industry gathered for discussion, debates, and resolutions. A final report will be prepared on the outcomes of the workshop.
On October 1, 2015, U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson appointed Professor Yacov Haimes to a three-year membership on the Homeland Security Science and Technology Advisory Committee. The Homeland Security Science and Technology Advisory Committee (HSSTAC) serves as a source of independent expert advice for the department.
Governor Terry McAuliffe appointed Professor Barry Horowitz, chair of the U.Va. Department of Systems and Information Engineering, to the Virginia Cyber Security Commission in 2014. Prof. Horowitz will help oversee a new joint research project between various government agencies and private firms to address the threat of car hacking.
